Project Overview

The proposed Calala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is located approximately 5.8km southeast of the Tamworth CBD within the Tamworth regional municipality. The BESS has an approval to store up to 300MW, which is enough power to supply electricity for up to 20,000 homes for two hours.

The BESS site will be connected to NSW’s electricity grid via a transmission line that connects to the 330kV Tamworth Substation. The project will help meet NSW’s future electricity demands and will provide significant local benefits during construction and operation including investment in the local economy. The BESS will create approximately 170 full time jobs during construction and 7 during operations as well as funding community programs.

We welcome and invite local and regional partnering opportunities. You can register your interest on the provider/supplier registration form in the forms and surveys section below.

Construction and Traffic Updates

Variation to Construction Hours

Equis is consulting nearby residents on a proposed variation to the construction hours for the Calala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The variation is required to support more efficient sequencing of construction activities and help minimise the overall construction timeline.

Proposed Work Hours (Monday–Sunday):

  • 6:30am – 7:00am: Low‑noise activities
  • 7:00am – 5:00pm: General construction works
  • 5:00pm – 5:30pm: Low‑noise activities

Calala BESS - Escorted Heavy Vehicle Deliveries – April to June 2026

A total of six (6) escorted deliveries will transport oversize and over-mass equipment to the Calala BESS project site to ensure safe passage along the road network and compliance with approved permits and safety requirements.

Escorted deliveries are currently scheduled to take place on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, 29 April 2026 (subject to confirmation)
  • Tuesday, 12 May 2026
  • Wednesday, 20 May 2026
  • Friday, 12 June 2026

Please note:
Previously scheduled deliveries for 15 and 16 April 2026 will no longer proceed as planned.
Revised dates for these deliveries are to be confirmed (TBC) and will be communicated via this page once available.

These deliveries will travel along the access route shown on the map below. Traffic management and escort arrangements will be in place at all times to maintain safety for residents, road users and property access, and to minimise disruption wherever possible. Residents along the route may experience minor, short‑term traffic delays during delivery movements.
